Hypnotherapy

You Don't Have to Tell Me What Happened

For a lot of people, the biggest barrier to getting help isn't the fear itself — it's the thought of having to describe it out loud, in detail, to someone else. If that's the reason you've put off dealing with a phobia or a difficult memory, it's worth knowing this isn't the only way therapy has to work.

A technique built around not needing to explain

The Rewind Technique is a hypnotherapy approach designed specifically for this. Instead of talking through what happened, you tell me broadly what area we're working on — a fear of flying, a specific memory, a moment you'd rather not revisit — and the work itself happens without you narrating the content. You don't relive it, and you don't have to describe it to me.

This isn't a workaround or a lesser version of "real" therapy. It's a deliberate, structured method used in hypnotherapy specifically because, for many people, having to verbalise a traumatic or embarrassing memory is itself one of the hardest parts — and sometimes enough of a barrier that people avoid getting help altogether.

What actually happens in a session

You identify the general area — the fear, the situation, the category of memory — without describing the specific events. From there, the process works with the memory at a level that doesn't require you to speak its content aloud or relive it moment by moment. You remain aware and in control throughout; nothing happens without your understanding of what's going on.

Afterwards, most people describe the memory or trigger feeling noticeably different — less charged, more distant, more like an ordinary memory than an active wound.

Who this tends to suit

  • Specific, well-defined phobias — flying, needles, particular animals, medical procedures.
  • Isolated distressing memories — a single event or moment that still carries a strong emotional charge.
  • Situations where shame or privacy is the main obstacle — including professional contexts where discretion matters, or memories tied to sensitive personal circumstances.

What it isn't the right tool for

This approach is best suited to specific, isolated issues — a defined fear or a particular memory. For more complex or long-standing trauma (repeated experiences over time, complex PTSD, or trauma layered with other mental health conditions), it tends to work best alongside broader support, not as a replacement for it. A first conversation will always include an honest read on which of these situations applies to you. More on how hypnotherapy approaches anxiety and trauma more broadly here.

The goal was never to make you relive it. It was to change how much power it still has over you.

The first conversation is free, and simply about understanding your situation — no commitment.
